In a gesture of solidarity for Lebanon, Egyptian authorities have lit up their country’s major pyramids with the Lebanese flag.
The Egyptian Tourism and Antiquities Ministry illuminated the ancient Giza pyramids with the Lebanese flag after Beirut was shaken by a massive explosion that killed dozens and injured thousands.
On the other hand, the country’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement in which it expressed solidarity for Lebanon.
The Ministry affirmed that it was “intently following the significant development,” stressing that Egypt was researching how to help Lebanon “in this delicate circumstance.”
With that, Egypt has joined several countries that have expressed solidarity for Lebanon following the largely devastating Tuesday explosion.
World leaders such as France, the US, and others have sent messages of support and sympathy for the Lebanese people, with some promising aid for Lebanon’s burned-out medical response.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that France was sending first aid and resources to Lebanon.
“I express my fraternal solidarity for the Lebanese people after the explosion that caused a large number of casualties, this evening in Beirut, and caused serious damage,” the French President tweeted.
“France always stands by Lebanon,” he added.
Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel said through her spokeswoman that she was shocked by the event. She also promised aid for Lebanon.
“Italy is close to Lebanese friends in this tragic moment. Our thoughts go to the families of the victims, to whom we express our deep condolences, and to the injured people, to whom we wish a speedy recovery,” said Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Miao.
Similarly, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared: “We are monitoring and stand ready to assist the people of Lebanon as they recover from this horrible tragedy.”
On that note, US President Donald Trump promised, “the United States stands ready to assist Lebanon.”
Similar messages were sent to Lebanon from numerous countries in the region and across the world, including the UK, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Iran, and the UAE – which also lit up its Burj Khalifa with the Lebanese flag.
Even Israel, which is enemies with Lebanon and, as such, has no diplomatic relations with the country, has expressed its readiness to send aid to Beirut.
The chemical warehouse explosion has damaged and destroyed many houses and buildings in the capital, and displaced many people, in addition to the deaths and wounded.
It also prompted a recommendation by a national sciences expert that those in Beirut who can leave to other areas should do so.
