The harrowing explosion that hit Beirut Tuesday has attracted international attention. While some countries are promising aid, others are lighting up their iconic landmarks with the Lebanese flag to express solidarity.
Following the explosion that went off in a chemical warehouse at the Port of Beirut, Dubai shined the Lebanese flag on its most important landmark: Burj Khalifa.
“BurjKhalifa lights up in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Lebanon,” the official Twitter account of the tower captioned the posted picture, showing the tower illuminated with the Lebanese flag.
“Our condolences to our beloved people in Lebanon! Oh God, have mercy on those who have moved on to you … Oh God, bestow kindness upon its people … Oh God, give the people of Lebanon patience and solace,” the account added in Arabic.
The UAE’s show of solidarity accompanies several humanitarian gestures by some Arab countries, aimed at expressing support for Lebanon, following the devastating blast that has killed, as of the time of writing, 73 people, and injured around 3,700.
From the Arab world, Qatar sent condolences to Lebanese President Michel Aoun and promised that it would send field hospitals to assist Lebanon’s overwhelmed medical response.
Similarly, Saudi Arabia stood in support of the Lebanese people, stating that it is “watching with grave concern the aftermath of the explosion that occurred in the port of Beirut today, which resulted in deaths and injuries.”
Like the UAE, Egypt also illuminated its most famous landmark with the Lebanese flag on Tuesday, joining the numerous countries that have expressed solidarity with the Lebanese people from all around the world.
