As the month of Ramadan began in Lebanon, some retailers increased prices on essential products in high demand during this month.

Many citizens reported this issue as they struggled to manage their finances amidst the continuous price hikes, exacerbated by the economic crisis facing Lebanon and its citizens.

In response to these concerns, Caretaker Minister of Economy and Trade, Amine Salam, along with Tarek Younes, the director of the consumer protection department at the Economy Ministry, and a team of inspectors, conducted visits to various sectors.

They particularly focused on food markets, to ensure compliance with regulations and laws at the start of Ramadan.

These moves followed complaints received by the ministry from citizens regarding significant price disparities between different commercial centers or institutions, amidst heightened security measures by state authorities.

During the tour, Minister Salam emphasized: “The supervisory tour conducted today is a continuation of the Ministry of Economy’s efforts, especially in light of widespread reports and complaints about rising prices of goods”.

He underscored “the importance of government officials at all levels, alongside consumer protection authorities, in safeguarding the rights of citizens and sending a clear message to merchants across all scales of operation that regulatory oversight is active and vigilant”.

He assured “that price monitoring is conducted to ensure adherence to acceptable margins as stipulated by Lebanese laws.”

Additionally, he highlighted the ongoing weekly tours planned throughout Ramadan to maintain a strong supervisory presence and reaffirm the commitment of the Ministry of Economy and Consumer Protection.

Tarek Younes, director of the consumer protection department at the Economy Ministry, echoed Minister Salam’s sentiments, emphasizing the ministry’s dedication to addressing consumer concerns and maintaining regulatory oversight to protect citizens’ interests, according to (NNA).
