On September 18th, 18 people died from the coronavirus in Lebanon, including an 18-year-old.

On Saturday morning, Dr. Firass Abiad, the head of Lebanon’s main coronavirus hospital, the Rafik Hariri University Hospital (RHUH), woke up from a poor night’s sleep and tweeted some unfortunate news.

“I couldn’t sleep well last night. The coronavirus numbers are shocking,” he said. “The increase in the number of new cases was expected, but not at this rate.”

In the tweet, he announced that shocking news that an 18-year old boy was among those who died on Friday, September 18th, which had the highest number of deaths per day so far.

The young man was from the Miniyeh-Danniyeh district in North Lebanon and was suffering from preexisting health issues.

According to Dr. Abiad, he was being treated for a type of cancer that was responding well to treatment. However, chemotherapy depressed his immunity and made him susceptible to the virus.

He was the youngest among the 18 people who passed away that day. The others were well above their 50s and the majority of them had health conditions/long-term illnesses.
