The Lebanese Army announced Thursday that its troops had downed an Israeli drone in South Lebanon.

In a statement, the Army said that around 5:10 PM, an Israeli enemy drone penetrated the Lebanese airspace.

The drone hovered over the town of Aita Al-Shaab near the southern border and “was shot down by the personnel of one of the Army’s posts at a distance of 200 meters from the Blue Line inside Lebanese territory.”

On his part, the spokesman of the Israeli army announced that control over one of the army’s unmanned aerial vehicles had been lost on Thursday afternoon.

“During operational activity by a military force on the border with Lebanon, a military drone fell inside Lebanese territory,” he said.

The military official declared that there is no fear from the Israeli side of any information being leaked through the drone. This incident is the third of its kind to occur in the past two months.

Earlier on Thursday, many Lebanese reported a loud noise of fighter jets that seemed to have been flying over Lebanese areas at a low altitude.

Lebanon’s southern border has been cautiously calm since the Israeli army fired over 200 shells into Lebanon late in August after allegedly receiving gunfire from Hezbollah posts in South Lebanon.

Last week, UNIFIL Head of Mission and Force Commander Maj. Gen. Stefano Del Col convened with representatives of the Lebanese Army and its Israeli counterpart to discuss the situation on the border.

This was after the UN Security Council extended UNIFIL’s mandate and approved a French-drafted resolution that expands the peacekeeping force’s powers.
