Responding to Lebanon’s request, Interpol will be sending its team of experts, Incident Response Team (IRT), to the reeling Beirut for emergency assistance, it said in a statement.
On Tuesday, Lebanon experienced its worst peace-time explosion in history. The blast has been described as one of the biggest non-nuclear explosions ever.
Interpol’s IRT team includes experts in Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) who will provide on-site assistance, said the international organization.
“Interpol’s experience in providing this type of help can significantly help national authorities,” said the INTERPOL Chief.
“We will continue to provide whatever assistance is required and requested by Lebanon.”
Over a dozen countries from around the world have sent response teams and humanitarian assistance to Beirut.
Rescue teams from different countries have been working in the sites most affected by the explosion, mainly the port permisses, looking for survivors and victims.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese people have launched a petition to the UN Security Council, urging for an independent investigation.
