Lebanon’s public transport scene is getting a serious upgrade.
The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has pledged 30 new public buses that will run across the country, not just in Beirut.
That’s on top of an expected Chinese donation of around 100 more buses, bringing the total to roughly 130 new vehicles hitting Lebanese roads soon.
The move comes as part of the government’s efforts to expand the “Public Transport” service, which launched last year with 6 initial lines connecting Beirut and its suburbs.
New routes have already opened this year, linking the capital to Tripoli in the north, Sour in the south, and Chtoura in Bekaa.
MP Sagih Atieh, head of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Works, said the buses will help establish a proper nationwide network, easing congestion and giving commuters more options outside of private cars.
The announcement ties into bigger infrastructure plans, including the $40 million widening of the Jounieh highway.
For Lebanese drivers, this could mean fewer traffic jams and more reliable public transport – finally. Each city bus can replace an estimated 40 cars off the roads.
