In a significant declaration made from Beirut on Thursday, President of the European Commission Ursula Von Der Leyen unveiled a substantial aid package amounting to one billion euros aimed at fostering stability in Lebanon.

During a press conference following her discussions with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and the Cypriot President, Von Der Leyen revealed the specifics of the aid package, valued at one billion euros and spanning from the present year until 2027.

Of the total aid amount, a significant portion, 736 million euros, is designated to support Syrian refugees and other vulnerable groups within Lebanon.

Additionally, 200 million euros are earmarked to enhance the capacity of Lebanese security services in enforcing border control and managing migration flows. These figures were provided by the Cypriot government, highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative.

The timing of Von De Leyen’s visit, accompanied by Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades, is notable. It coincides with Nicosia’s recent actions in returning migrant boats that departed irregularly from Lebanon.

This move comes amidst persistent calls from Beirut for the international community to assist in the repatriation of Syrian refugees, following the easing of tensions in several Syrian provinces.

Von Der Leyen emphasized the importance of collaboration with local authorities to tackle the escalating issue of refugee smuggling, particularly towards Cyprus.

This collaboration, she stressed, is crucial in effectively combating the illicit operations that threaten regional stability.

Furthermore, Von Der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting the Lebanese army and security forces through the provision of equipment and specialized training aimed at enhancing border management capabilities.

In a recent event, North Lebanon Governor Judge Ramzi Nohra issued a decree urging municipalities and village mayors to monitor the movements of Syrian refugees and promptly address any violations on public and private properties.
