A gathering of representatives from major Christian factions convened at Bkirki, under the auspices and presence of Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Beshara Boutros al-Rahi, to review and endorse a political document crafted by the Maronite patriarchate.

The Purpose of the meeting that was held on Thursday is to address feedback from Christian political parties regarding the document proposed by Bkirki.

The meeting saw participation from various Christian parliamentary blocs and parties, except the Marada Movement.

Discussions centered around a document drafted by Bishop Bou Najem, which had been formulated through prior consultations with Christian parties.

Each party provided input on the document, emphasizing the inclusion of national clauses such as Lebanon’s neutrality and non-alignment with any particular axis, the disarmament policy, constitutional preservation, expanded decentralization, and adherence to international resolutions, notably Resolutions 1701 and 1559.

While the attendees refrained from discussing the process of presidential elections or its mechanisms, deeming it a constitutional matter beyond debate, they addressed ongoing partnership issues and concerns regarding employment disruptions within the Christian framework, excluding them from the official statement.

Consultations were also held on how to disseminate and present the document to stakeholders nationwide, considering options such as inviting political leaders from other sects to discuss it under Bkirki’s patronage or engaging with other religious leaders for input.

According to “Annahar,” the meeting did not produce the anticipated “Birki Document”, indicating further refinement is necessary to ensure its comprehensive nature and national character when presented to various partners.

Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi is expected to convene another meeting, possibly after Easter, to resume discussions and endorse a unified paper that addresses all Christian and national concerns.
