Amidst efforts to monitor the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in Lebanon, a recent report from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) provides insight into the nation’s advancement in 2023.

The report indicates progress in seven of the Sustainable Development Goals, with one goal deemed “on track” while two others are categorized as “off track.”

The report evaluates how well Arab countries are doing in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations for 2030. These goals were established in 2015, and countries are assessed as either “on track,” “making progress,” “off track,” or having “insufficient data.”

Regarding Lebanon, the report highlights a significant challenge: there is insufficient data available to accurately evaluate the progress toward achieving the remaining seven Sustainable Development Goals.

This limitation underscores the need for enhanced data collection and reporting mechanisms in Lebanon to effectively monitor and address the country’s efforts towards sustainable development.

On the other hand, ESCWA has recognized Lebanon’s progress in various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Lebanon is advancing in eradicating poverty and ensuring clean water and sanitation, aligning with several other Arab nations.

Additionally, Lebanon is making strides in clean and affordable energy, industry, innovation, and infrastructure.

Furthermore, Lebanon is progressing in sustainable cities and communities, life on land, and partnerships for the goals.

However, challenges remain in achieving zero hunger and promoting decent work and economic growth.

ESCWA also notes a lack of comprehensive data in critical areas like gender equality, quality education, and climate action, hindering a full assessment of Lebanon’s sustainable development progress.
