The Lebanese Army successfully carried out a rescue operation on Friday, saving more than 100 migrants whose boat encountered mechanical issues in the Mediterranean Sea.
According to the state-run National News Agency, no injuries were reported.
The distressed boat, carrying 125 individuals—124 Syrians and one Lebanese—sent out a distress signal near Palm Islands within Lebanon’s maritime borders.
The vessel was subsequently towed to Tripoli’s port, where first aid was administered to some passengers. The army disclosed that among the migrants were eight women and 24 children.
This incident adds to the growing number of Syrians seeking refuge in Lebanon due to deteriorating economic conditions back home.
In a related development, Lebanese forces arrested multiple Lebanese and Syrian human traffickers in August as they were organizing illegal sea voyages to Europe.
Last September, a tragic event unfolded when a migrant boat departing from Lebanon capsized off the Syrian coast, resulting in at least 94 deaths and subsequent arrests of suspected traffickers.
