Lebanese sisters Michelle and Noel Keserwany have made waves in the film industry with their directorial debut, “Les Chenilles.”
The 30-minute short film tells the story of two young women who meet while working as waitresses in France and explores themes of friendship and female independence.
At the 73rd Berlin Film Festival, the International Short Film Jury recognized the Keserwany sisters’ outstanding work by awarding them a “Golden Bear” award.
The film’s stars, including Noel Keserwany and Masa Zaher, attended the Berlinale premiere along with the directors.
Michelle Keserwany, who co-wrote the script of the award-winning movie “Capernaum” by Nadine Labaki, also made her directorial debut with “Les Chenilles.”
In a statement, the jury praised the film’s “carefully arranged image and sound,” which transformed the means of women’s oppression into those of their liberation.
The film was also selected as Berlin Short Film Candidate for the European Short Film Awards.
Aside from their success in the film industry, the Keserwany sisters have been producing remarkable songs reflecting the situation and struggles in Lebanon with Zaffetleh el Tarik and Alf Leileh w Leil.
Their career in writing and composing songs began by coincidence after Michelle’s Jagal El USEK got released by accident and quickly became a big hit.
