The Lebanese doctor Samia Khoury received the 2021 King Salman International Award for Disability Research, Health, and Medical Sciences Branch. The ceremony will take place next week, December 4th, at King Faisal University in Riyadh.
The prestigious award encourages and recognizes local, regional, and global efforts aimed at influencing science and knowledge in various areas of disability.
Dr. Khoury is a renowned neurologist known for her clinical work on Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a disease-causing severe disability if left untreated.
As a Professor of Neurology and Immunology, her area of research is focused on understanding the pathogenesis and mechanism of regulation in Experimental Autoimmune Encephalomyelitis (EAE).
Most of her work led to the implementation of clinical trials that impacted clinical care and helped in developing databases capturing clinical and demographic information of the MS patient population.
Dr. Khoury serves as a Director of Abu Haidar Neuroscience Institute (AHNI) and Director of Nehme and Therese Tohme Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center, where she works on raising awareness about MS, promoting research to find the causes of the disease, and finding the best treatment.
She worked on several community initiatives to raise awareness about the disease, including establishing the “Friends of Multiple Sclerosis at AUBMC Fund” to raise money to assist patients with MS who can not afford the treatment.
