Shortly after Britain announced its plan to expand its ban on ‘All things Hezbollah’, Honduras and Colombia designated Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

These decisions were declared in the meeting on counter-terrorism in Bogotá that included ministers from several Latin American countries and US Secretary of Mike Pompeo.

Colombia did so by accepting the full US and EU lists of terrorist organizations. They included Hezbollah, Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hamas, National Liberation Army, Islamic Jihad, Great Islamic Eastern Warriors Front, and many more.

According to Colombian President Iván Duque, the adoption of these lists “will allow timely detection of members of cells such as Hezbollah, Islamic State, and Al-Qaeda. We call for harmonization of these databases between countries.”

Colombia adoptó listas de personas y grupos terroristas de Unión Europea y EE.UU., que permitirá detectar oportunamente miembros de células como Hezbollah, Estado Islámico y Al Qaeda. Honduras Foreign Minister Lisandro Rosales and Deputy Security Minister Luis Suazo said that President Juan Orlando Hernández wants “to raise this concern about Hezbollah’s terrorist activities in Latin America.”

President Hernández has declared on January 5th that “Honduras would join Guatemala and other allies to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.”

6/7 On January 5th, 2020, I met with the President-elect of Guatemala and announced that Honduras would join Guatemala and other allies to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

US Secretary Pompeo congratulated the countries that designated “Iran-backed Hezbollah a terrorist organization,” and stated in his tweet that his country “continues to rally international support to counter these threats.”

We applaud the announcements of Colombia, Honduras, and Guatemala to designate #Iran-backed #Hizballah a terrorist organization. It and other transnational terrorist groups remain active in the region. The U.S. continues to rally international support to counter these threats.
