U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Joanna Wronecka visited the northern city of Tripoli, where she met with local authorities and members of parliament, as well as NGOs working to promote reconciliation, capacity-building, and opportunities for the youth.
The visit was part of Wronecka’s regular trips to different regions of Lebanon to develop a better understanding of the situation on the ground and the political and socio-economic dynamics as well as to assess how the United Nations and its partners can best support Lebanon and its people.
“There is enormous human and economic potential in Tripoli, despite the high levels of poverty and the very difficult livelihood conditions that have been exacerbated by the country’s recent socio-economic crisis,” the Special Coordinator said during a tour of the city.
Wronecka said in a tweet that she was “delighted to be among Tripolitans from different walks of life, true to Tripoli’s and Lebanon’s rich socio-cultural mosaic.”
The Special Coordinator discussed the situation in Tripoli and the opportunities for progress in meetings with the relevant stakeholders of Tripoli, including the Governor of North Lebanon, religious leaders, parliamentarians, and members of the civil society.
She praised the “remarkable resilience of Tripolitans that must be built upon to realize their true potential and to fulfill their aspirations.”
