Ever since the Russian invasion of Ukraine started, food inflation has seen a rapid increase all over the world.
According to the World Bank, Lebanon witnessed the worst food inflation worldwide in the first half of 2022.
Lebanon recorded a 332% increase in food prices, beating the likes of Zimbabwe (255%), Venezuela (155%), and Tukey (94%).
According to the World Bank, however, the War in Ukraine was not the only factor behind the collapse of food security in Lebanon.
The Beirut Port Blast destroyed Lebanon’s wheat silos and left the government unable to store and distribute wheat to its 6.8 million inhabitants.
Thanks to a deal brokered by Turkey and the United Nations, however, Ukrainian wheat is expected to be back in international markets.
As a result of this deal, Lebanon is expected to receive a cargo ship from Ukraine carrying more than 26,000 tons of corn.
