Only a few days after the Internal Security Forces (ISF) stopped yet another illegal emigration attempt, Nida Al Watan newspaper revealed that more and more people plan on leaving in a similar fashion in the coming months.
According to the local media, Lebanese people living in poverty, especially those from Akkar, are being charged $7,000 per person to make that dangerous trip to Europe.
The continuously worsening economic conditions Lebanese people have been enduring are forcing many into unemployment. In Akkar, for example, almost 150 families are supported by fishermen working at Al Arida Port, however, they are facing an imminent danger of losing their jobs.
The Head of the Fishermen Gathering in Al Arida, Mohammad Abla, has warned that the port has not been renovated in many months.
Abla added that if the government does not find a way to cover maintenance bills for the port and its vessels, many families will have no other choice besides illegally heading to Europe.
