President Michel Aoun met with UN Special Coordinator Joanna Wronecka on Wednesday to discuss the administration of Resolution 1701 regarding the maritime dispute.
“Lebanon is committed to implementing Resolution 1701 to maintain stability and security on the southern border,” said Wronecka.
According to the United Nations Peacemakers, the Resolution 1701 “calls for the full cessation of hostilities, the deployment of Lebanese [Army] Forces to Southern Lebanon, parallel withdrawal of Israeli forces behind the Blue Line, strengthening the UN force (UNIFIL) to facilitate the entry of Lebanese [Army] Forces in the region and the establishment of a demilitarized zone between the Blue Line and the Litani River.”
This meeting was held prior to a briefing that is to take place later this month where Lebanon’s crisis and the development of the demarcation of the maritime border will be discussed, which Wronecka will then submit to the UN Security Council.
Over the past month, U.S Mediator Ambassador Amos Hochstein has been negotiating with both countries on demarcating Lebanon’s southern border.
