On Tuesday, the Minister of Public Health, Dr. Firas Abiad, received from Japan a donation of solar panels, medical supplies for intensive care, and a system for sterilizing government hospitals.
The equipment was delivered to Baabda Governmental University Hospital, in the company of the Japanese Ambassador to Lebanon, Okubo Takeshi, and the Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in the region, Mohammad Othman Akram.
Ambassador Okubo tweeted the news with these words: “Today, I participated with Firas Abiad launching a project that equipped Baabda Governmental University Hospitals and Rafic Hariri University Hospitals with solar panels through UNOPS.”
“Lebanon has huge untapped potentials in the field of renewable energy that must be harnessed to secure electricity and help vital sectors,” he added.
The donation, completed through UNOPS, is part of the Urgent Support to Critical Health Facilities in Lebanon Project, funded by the government of Japan.
A new project titled “Urgent Support to the Health Sector in Lebanon” will also be initiated, to provide governmental hospitals with medical equipment and solar panels.
According to the state-run NNA, Dr. Abiad was also set to inaugurate today a new Department of Plastic Surgery fully “equipped with the latest medical equipment and surgical techniques” at the Baabda Governmental University Hospital.”
