Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, met on Tuesday with the United Nations’ Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and asked for support in securing food aid for Lebanon.
PM Mikati shared with the UN official Lebanon’s rising concerns at the food security challenges triggered by the war in Ukraine.
He asked for the UN to support Lebanon with food to secure the population with enough food supplies and help meet the high demands coming from the Syrian refugees living in the country.
The United Nations is fully aware of the food crisis rising in Lebanon.
On Monday, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that Lebanon is now facing the consequences of the Russian war on Ukraine with an increase in fuel prices and wheat shortage.
The impact of that war has started to widen and deepen, affecting the global economy and food security, and more particularly the already-struggling countries like Lebanon.
Guterres warned that the problem in the agricultural and food sector worldwide will cause “political instability and unrest around the globe.”
Lebanon has had to ban the export of over a dozen of its local food products in preparation to cope with the rising food crisis.
