TIME Magazine unveiled on Thursday, for the first time, a “Women of the Year” list, naming “12 Leaders Working Toward A More Equal World” and featuring Lebanese-British human rights lawyer Amal Clooney.
The list, which hails 12 personalities in different fields, aims to celebrate International Women’s Day, which takes place on March 8.
“Creating a better future for women means building bridges across generations, communities, and borders. These extraordinary leaders are working toward a more equal world,” stated TIME Magazine.
Born in Beirut, Amal Alamuddin Clooney moved to London during the Lebanese Civil War.
She studied at St. Hugh’s College in Oxford, where she was the recipient of a scholarship and the Shrigley Award. In 2000, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Arts in Jurisprudence.
In 2001, she entered New York University School of Law to complete her Master’s degree in Laws.
She was also a clerk for the clerkships program at the International Court of Justice.
By 2014, she became a prominent figure in law and her work in the humanitarian field, handling highly critical cases.
Her career as human rights barrister has given her the privilege to be selected for the UN’s three-member commission to look into the conflicts in the Gaza Strip during the Israel–Gaza conflict.
She also represented Julian Assange and the former presidents of Ukraine and the Republic of Maldives.
The Lebanese-British lawyer is also an activist, constantly supporting the importance of freedom of the press. She is also known for working with the Yazidis who endured ISIS brutalities in Iraq.
Amal Clooney is currently working in international law, criminal law, human rights law, and extradition law, while also teaching at Columbia University.
Other than being outspoken of freedom of the press and advocating peace, Amal Alamuddin Clooney does not hesitate to speak up and give back to Lebanon, her country of origin.
She and her husband, George Clooney, have donated a lot of money to the Lebanese community, and Amal also fiercely spoke in support of the Lebanese Revolution.
Amal Clooney is one of these Lebanese women raising high Lebanon’s name in the diaspora, and standing as a beacon of light and inspiration for her peers in the homeland, and beyond.
She’s been relentless in making a difference in the world, fighting for justice and human rights, and ‘working toward a more equal world.’
