Prime Minister Najib Mikati sponsored on Thursday the reopening of the Lebanese National Library in Sanayeh, following the completion of its restoration after being severely damaged by the Beirut Blast.

PM Mikati thanked the Lebanese people for cooperating with the government in its mission to curb the economic meltdown, put Lebanon on the track of recovery and stability, and hold the parliamentary elections on their scheduled date.

“We hope that, in the foreseeable future, we launch the national economic and financial recovery program after concluding negotiations with the International Monetary Fund,” he said.

“This step, God willing, shall place our country on the course of progressive solution which, in turn, shall restore recovery and stability,” he noted.

The Minister of Culture, Mohammad Mourtada, has announced on Wednesday via Twitter that: “Under the current circumstances, and despite all that our beloved Lebanon suffers from, the pulse of life will return to the heart of the National Library in Beirut.”

Lebanon’s National Library is located near the Sanayeh Gardens in Beirut. This public institution first shut down in 1979, during Lebanon’s civil war.

Since then, the National Library has faced many problems regarding its restoration and reopening.

It reopened in 2018 only to be closed again, stricken by the Beirut port explosion.

The National Library is Lebanon’s center of culture since the Ottoman-Era. It holds much important cultural heritage that reflects Lebanon’s intellectual heritage.
