On World Food Day, 16th October, an NGO called FoodBlessed organized a “Ride Against Hunger” where people participated in a two-hours ride across the streets of Beirut as a way to raise funds and awareness on poverty and food waste in Lebanon.

FoodBlessed is a local hunger-relief initiative that works with businesses and the civil society to reduce the number of people going hungry in Lebanon. The community-based, volunteer-driven food rescue program provides an effective and efficient solution to hunger, while addressing the serious and growing problem of food waste in Lebanon.

This NGO, run entirely on donations and volunteer efforts, has shown tremendous work in its occasional lunches and stand-alone events, as well as their past weekly soup kitchen endeavors that hosted for over two years 600 people every Saturday in Bourj Hammoud.

Not only are they active in the field with cooking and serving hot meals for the people, but they also are always one call away for a food rescue from events, training activities, and even supermarkets.

More than 100 people participated in the “Ride Against Hunger” on World Food Day to help FoodBlessed reach more areas affected by the bad economy that the protestors across Lebanon are protesting for.

The course was supposed to be taken from Beirut by Bike in Biel, Mar Mkhayel, Adliyeh, Mathaf, Sodeco, Martyr’s Square, and then back to Beirut by Bike. However, the participants were too many and had to be accommodated carefully that they were not able to complete the whole path.

Foodblessd wrote on its official Instagram page: “This year on World Food Day, Foodblessed planned a “Ride Against Hunger and Food Waste” to help support all our weekly lunches, soup kitchens and various activities! The theme for World Food Day this year was healthy diets, and what’s healthier than biking off some calories for a good cause? Absolutely nothing if you ask us!”

Protestors are the real heroes of Lebanon because they are the voices of the weak. Initiatives as small but effective as FoodBlessed’s are the resistance and revolution that give us hope in a definite Resurrection of Lebanon.
