The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs (IFI) at the American University of Beirut (AUB) has recently announced an IFI-Google Policy Fellow position where the Institute will host a one-year research fellow starting on November 2019.
According to Issam Fares Institute, the research fellow’s work will focus on public policy topics related to the Internet, e-government, technology, development, social media, content monitoring, data collection, privacy, and freedom of expression.
This fellow will also, throughout his or her one-year program, conduct policy research and analysis, draft reports and white papers, attend government and industry meetings, and participate in other advocacy activities.
IFI’s Interim Director Dr. Nasser Yassin described the new fellowship as “an innovative project that responds to the emerging need in Lebanon and the region to manage the growing ICT sector, and the important role it can play in how governments make effective and more transparent decisions.”

In regard to the collaboration with Google, Dr. Yassin added that “Collaborating with a multinational technology company such as Google is a great opportunity for the academic and technology worlds to meet and formulate future Internet-related policies.”
From his side, Head of Public Policy and Government Relations at Google MENA, Selim Eddé, expressed his excitement to announce the fourth Google Policy Fellowship program in the region.
“This program offers students an early-stage professionals the opportunity to spend time contributing to the public dialogue, and exploring future academic and professional interests,” he explained.
As per AUB, the fellow should be a graduate-level technology expert or an early-career social scientist who is passionate about technology and its impact on society, as he or she will produce knowledge related to technology in the MENA region.
The Issam Fares Institute for Public Policy and International Affairs at the American University of Beirut (IFI – AUB Policy Institute) is an independent, research-based, and policy-oriented institute that was inaugurated in 2006.

The institute aims to initiate and develop policy-relevant research in and about the Middle-East region. That in addition to “expanding and deepening knowledge production and to creating a space for the interdisciplinary exchange of ideas among researchers, civil society actors, and policymakers.”
