The UN Security Council adopted on Monday evening the 2591 decision, which extended the mandate of UNIFIL for another year. The announcement was made by Lebanon’s envoy to the United Nations Amal Mudallali through her account on Twitter.

The new resolution reaffirms the mandate of UNIFIL as stipulated in Resolution 1701 (2006) and confirmed by subsequent resolutions.

Exceptionally, the UNIFIL Security Council demanded within the 2591 decision to take exceptional measures to support the Lebanese Army logistically and with non-lethal items (fuel, food, and medicine) for a period of six months, and within the limits of local resources.

It urged for more international support to the Lebanese Army, and the must of its “effective and durable” deployment in the south.

In regards to UNIFIL’s tripartite, which is the only forum of meetings between the Lebanese and Israeli representatives, the Council called for the parties to make it constructive and expand its use in order to “resolve the conflict and build confidence.”

The security council condemned all violations of the Blue Line by air and land, strongly calling on the parties to respect the cessation of hostilities and fully cooperate with the UN and the UNIFIL.

It also condemned the attacks on the UNIFIL and UN personnel, and all “acts of harassment and intimidation” demanding the respect of UNIFIL’s safety, freedom of movement, and access to the Blue Line.”

In that regard, the Council called on Lebanon to expedite its investigations into the attacks against UNIFIL and “bring the perpetrators of these attacks to justice promptly.”

It called all the parties to immediately abide by the provisions of Resolution 1701 (2006).
