On Thursday, employees of various sectors and syndicates across the country will take part in a general strike called by the Lebanese Trade Union over government deadlock.
Bank and hospital employees, Beirut Port employees, transport workers, Middle East Airline employees, Fuel Distributors Syndicate employees, the Liban Post, and more have announced their commitment to the strike.
Even groups from political parties such as the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM), which holds the largest government bloc as well as part of the alliance, along with Hezbollah that holds the majority in government, will join the strike. The Future Movement has called on its supporters to protest as well.
The strike is taking place following the public rift between President Michel Aoun and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri.
On Tuesday, Aoun accused Berri of interfering in the Cabinet formation and breaching the Constitution.
In response, Berri released a statement on Wednesday indicating that Aoun was blatantly rejecting that Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri heads the Cabinet. “It is not your right to reject Hariri,” Berri said.
The general political unrest is ongoing as political bickering continues between Baabda and Ain El-Tineh.
Meanwhile, daily protests have been taking place in some parts of the country over the ever-worsening living conditions.
