Security forces have seized a large amount of drugs in the city of Sidon, southern Lebanon, the National News Agency reported on Friday.
The Anti-Narcotics Office in South Lebanon, in coordination with Sidon’s customs office, managed to seize 2 trucks containing cannabis inside metal containers, ready to be transported for shipping.
The trucks had been parked in a bystreet near the Marjan roundabout in Sidon. A patrol of the Anti-Narcotics Office unloaded both trucks and searched them thoroughly and found 32 barrels packed with cannabis.
The vehicles were scheduled to go to the Port of Sidon, but their drivers parked them in the bystreet and escaped to an unknown location a day after security forces uncovered a cannabis-smuggling operation, involving 2 trucks, from Beqaa to Sidon.
The tonnes of cannabis seized by Lebanese authorities were meant to be shipped aboard a cargo ship to Egypt, according to the NNA.
In the latest drug shipment originating from Lebanon to be busted abroad, last month, Greek authorities seized more than 4 tonnes of cannabis hidden inside cupcake-making machines.
This was after the notorious pomegranate drug shipment that Saudi authorities seized in April, upon which Saudi Arabia banned the import of fruit and vegetable consignment from Lebanon.
