Lebanon intends to ask Russia for help in redeveloping the Port of Beirut and other projects, Russian media reported on Tuesday.
RIA, a Russian state-run news agency, cited Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri‘s special representative, George Shaaban, as saying that Hariri intends to request Russia’s economic assistance for Lebanon.
As per RIA, the assistance that Hariri will seek includes helping restore the Beirut Port, which was destroyed during the devastating August 4 explosion, as well as helping build electric power stations.
“There is a need to rebuild new power plants that will be able to supply the country with 24-hour electricity… We will look to Russia and its possible assistance to Lebanon, both in these sectors and others,” the news agency quoted Shaaban as saying.
In addition, Hariri will explore the possibility of Russia supplying his country with vaccines to help fight the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
It’s worth mentioning that last week, German companies presented Lebanon with a multi-billion-dollar project to redevelop the Port of Beirut and neighboring areas.
However, the plan’s financing and execution would depend on political and economic reforms in Lebanon, which has lacked a government for around 8 months.
