Touring the ancient Roman ruins of Baalbek and wandering curiously around its empty and torn-down halls, one cannot help but try to imagine what the withered structure must have been like thousands of years ago.

Today, the iconic landmark, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Lebanon, has been brought back to life in a one-of-a-kind experience: Baalbek Reborn.

Created in collaboration with the German Archaeological Institute, the Lebanese Ministry of Culture, and Flyover Zone, Baalbek Reborn allows people to travel through time on a virtual tour of the ancient ruins to view them as they were in their prime.

People can take the virtual tour for free using a downloadable application (here). The app offers a guided tour, but users can also explore the virtual reconstruction and wander around the temples and structures freely.

While virtually exploring, users can listen to a commentary by experts at the German Archaeological Institute describing the site. In fact, the institute has funded research in Baalbek since 1997.

If that wasn’t cool enough, the app also includes a ‘Time Warp’ feature that allows users to move between the past and the present… literally, time travel!

Watch the trailer of the app to see what archeologists believe Baalbek looked like in the past:
