Through its Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI), the United States government has provided $500,000 to help the Lebanese American University (LAU) conduct free PCR tests in remote villages.
The grant supports LAU’s Mobile Clinic mission to reach residents of rural areas in Lebanon who are unable to reach major cities to undergo PCR testing.
LAU’s Mobile Clinic aims to offer over 1,200 free PCR tests to individuals from all Lebanese governorates who have come in contact with a coronavirus case or are showing symptoms.
The provision of half a million dollars comes in addition to the existing $41 million in COVID-19-related assistance provided by the U.S. Embassy in Lebanon during these difficult times.
Lebanon is entering an 11-day state of emergency lockdown and strict 24-hour daily curfew. People must stay indoors at all times unless exempted.
