    U.N. Special Coordinator For Lebanon Slams Politicians For Gov’t Formation Delay

    U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jan Kubis criticized Lebanon’s politicians for delaying the government formation process amid their country’s crippling crisis.

    “The economy and financial, banking system is in shambles, social peace starts to crumble down, security incidents on the rise, the edifice of Lebanon is shaking in its fundaments,” Kubis said in a tweet on Monday.

    “And political leaders seem to wait for Biden. But this is Lebanon, not the USA,” the diplomat added.

    More than two months have passed since the appointment of Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri to – supposedly swiftly – form a rescue government that would put Lebanon on the right track of reform.

    Hopes were high for a government before Christmas, but they were crushed with Hariri’s recent announcement that there would be no government before the new year.

    The delay comes as the country’s crises continue to worsen and the lifting of the subsidy of basic items grows nearer, threatening to plunge more people into poverty and to push the vulnerable even deeper into misery.

    Kubis has criticized Lebanon’s leaders before over the same issue.

    Earlier this month, he reminded them in a tweet that there will be no international support for Lebanon if they don’t implement reforms to regain the trust of the Lebanese people.
