12 Things You Need To Know About Dating In Lebanon

The first date process is not as universal as some believe. Depending on where you are in the world, the dating experience dramatically varies.

Lebanon’s dating scene, for example, is very unique. Here are a few things to expect when securing a Lebanese man or woman that may excite or frighten you about the prospect of a first date:

    1. Your last name matters

The fact that we tell most of our non-Lebanese friends abroad is very true. Depending on their last name, you can tell a lot about a person. Where they live, what religion they practice, and their name’s arbitrary yet actual ‘rank’.

In this sense, Lebanon’s dating scene resembles your favorite Jane Austen novel. It also helps to know if you are distantly related to someone you want to pursue romantically.

    2. Chivalry is not dead here

In many parts of the world, there is an ongoing debate on gender politics in the context of a date.

Who picks who up? Who picks up the check? Who opens the door for who? This debate is non-existent in Lebanon, for men will gladly do most of these things.

    3. Expect a party

Lebanon’s nightlife is some of the Middle East’s wildest, funniest, and most unpredictable aspects.

As such, partying is deeply embedded in Lebanese culture. Going out dancing and drinking with your significant other is not sleazy here; it’s just a fun way to spend a Friday night.

    4. Things move fast

When dating in Lebanon, things move fast.

Big romantic gestures happen early on – from expensive dates to epic proclamations of love. However, early marriages are no longer an expectation in Lebanese culture.

    5. Get ready to meet the parents

You can bet that if you’re consistently dating someone in Lebanon, your parents are going to need to know who exactly you are spending your time with.

You can slowly soft launch your partner’s name into your ‘friendship circle’ when telling your parents who you are going out with, but after a short while, things come to a boiling point, and introductions will become inevitable.

    6. We are green with envy

Okay, this point is not intended to play into the possessive Lebanese man stereotypes, but there are levels.

For both Lebanese men and women, a healthy amount of jealousy sustains the relationship and shows you that you care.

    7. We are heartbreakers

For most of our Lebanese peers who study in Europe or America, we can attest that saying you are Lebanese – especially to other people in the Arab world – is usually met with a frustrated sigh.

For foreigners, we are typecast as manipulative heartbreakers. There may or may not be truth in this stereotype.

    8. Sassiness… for a few

This is not targeted towards Lebanese women. Attitude, assurance, and boldness permeate any conversation you will have with a Lebanese man.

While intimidating, they are sure to make you laugh more than piss you off.

    9. Looks matter

Embedded into the upbringing of any young Lebanese child is the idea that appearance matters.

How you carry yourself and look when you go out, as well as manners and etiquette—they all matter. As such, they are equally crucial in someone we pick to date.

    10. We are no strangers to a fight

Okay, this one is predominantly targeted at us women.

We are opinionated and feel no shame in letting a significant other know how we think. It’s not hostility; it’s honesty.

    11. Know our priorities

While certain mentalities and cultural expectations remain true in Lebanese culture, some things—especially for women—are changing. The typical domestic wife is no longer a cultural standard; we now prioritize our education and careers.

While romance and marriage remain integral, women no longer have to choose between the two. So, as always, expect women who are driven and passionate about all aspects of life.

    12. Be prepared to laugh

One thing that unites all Lebanese – irrespective of religion, gender, or social standing – is an impeccable sense of humor. Our personalities are par for the course of living in a country as unpredictable and often scary as Lebanon.

On the bright side, if you are dating someone Lebanese, you will never have to experience a dull moment.
