The Internal Security Forces (ISF) have foiled plans by Islamic State groups to carry out three suicide attacks in the southern suburbs of Beirut, the interior minister said on Wednesday.

During the press conference, the Interior minister, Bassam Mawlawi, announced the thwarting of the terrorist network made of Palestinian nationalities recruiting young people to carry out large bombings with explosive belts and rockets that would have killed many.

Mawlawi also said that terrorist attacks near the capital Beirut would have inflicted a large number of civilian casualties.

The IS has in the past organized many deadly attacks that killed and/or wounded hundreds of people in Lebanon.

There has been concern recently that Lebanon’s severe economic crisis was driving young men to join the terrorist organization. Several Lebanese individuals were among militants killed by the Iraqi security forces recently.

The ISF said that the terrorist attacks were planned to be carried out in three places targeting civilians: Al Kadhim Complex, Al Laylaki Complex, and Hussainiya Al-Nasser in Ouzai.

Two suspects were arrested the same day and are being held in custody, Mawlawi said. Explosives, weapons, and munitions had also been seized.
